FatCow Hosting and Mail Servers for Google Apps

Fatcow Logo

It came to my attention that in the past when setting up Google Apps via Fatcow Hosting, that Google Apps doesn’t give you much help with what MX records you need to use to make it all work. So I had just a couple of minutes and decided to make this quick post to give you some ideas on how I was able to get it to work for a few of my clients using Fatcow.

Essentially as you may know, that in Google Apps you need to point your MX Records from your hosting company to Google’s.  This gets the major part out of the way to get you started on that process. Visit here to learn more about setting up Google Apps.

Follow these steps to access your MX Records to modify:

  1. Access your control panel
  2. Click on “Domain” drop down on the top menu
  3. Select “Domain Central”
  4. Select the “plus sign” next to the domain you want to change
  5. Select “DNS”
  6. From the Modify drop down box below select “MX records”
  7. Then enter the below MX Records

Priority Host Points To:
5 * ALT1.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM
5 * ALT2.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM
1 * ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM
10 * ASPMX2.GOOGLEMAIL.COM
10 * ASPMX3.GOOGLEMAIL.COM

I hope this helps a little and my apologies it was a tad bit short on explaining! If you have questions.. just leave the comments below and I will attempt to do my best to help!

simple question…when i got to the mx records… there were two entries in there already at priority 30… do i delete those two entries or leave them?

      Hey Jimnie!

I would copy those down as a “reference” but you simply delete those and add the new ones in. So all you have is the new ones to make it all work.

What happens to your email while this transfer is taking place? I change my MX records 9 hrs ago and I am not getting email yet.

Email… gets bounced back to whoever sent it to you… sadly. I have had the process take depending on domain registrar anywhere from 24-72 hours. Now, if the records aren’t correct then that would lead to the longer delay. Who is your domain registrar?

Should there be a period on the end of each of these entries?

Usually the hosting company stripes the “.” out. You will be good without it.

When I enter domain central and click on my desired domain, there is no DNS tab? Any thoughts?

      Jon,

I would hop on the chat support with FatCow. Ask them to turn that feature on so you can see it as one of the options when you “expand” your domain to select the different options. Seems like every time I transfer a new domain or have a new account….I have to go through that process for them to “make it available” to me.

Thanks so much Michael, they have enabled my DNS, and I followed your directions shortly after. I am still not able to receive mail at my new address though through the gmail interface. All mail I am sending to this address is being returned. Does it just take some time before it takes effect? I made the changes, yesterday during the day, and I believe it has been more than 24 hours now.

Jon, glad they got you all taken care of! I have had it take up to 48 hours before. I know this is a pain in the rear because it seems like forever. Can you send me a screen shot of how you have it in fatcow?  Do this for me… send me an email with a screen shot at info——@-  michaelstults—.com. Let me see if I can see something. Do you have your domain registered at Fatcow as well or just use them for hosting?
